Alexander Hamilton is a conductor, choir trainer, organist, and teacher based in London. The winner of First Prize at the Northern Ireland International Organ Competition 2015, he held organ scholarships at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle; Trinity College, Cambridge; and Westminster Abbey. Alexander read Music at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he also accompanied the world-famous College Choir, and appeared as both accompanist and soloist on a number of critically-acclaimed recordings, including discs of music by Stanford, Finzi, Vaughan Williams, Cecilia McDowall, and Owain Park. He also features as an organist on a recent album by the internationally-renowned vocal ensemble Voces8.

In September 2020, Alexander moved to Wells Cathedral as Assistant Director of Music, subsequently leading the Music Department there as Acting Director of Music between 2022 and 2024. In this role he oversaw all aspects of the Cathedral’s vibrant and busy musical life. As Artistic Director of Wells Cathedral Commissions, Alexander commissioned new works by composers including Grayston Ives, Joanna Marsh, Matthew Martin, and Lucy Walker. He was also Musical Director of Wells Cathedral Chamber Choir, and of Wells Cathedral Oratorio Society, through which he worked with orchestras including the English Symphony Orchestra, Southern Sinfonia, Music for Awhile, and Réjouissance. Recent and forthcoming performances as a conductor include Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, Mass in B minor, and St John Passion, Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius, Fauré’s Requiem, Handel’s Coronation Anthems and Messiah, and John Rutter’s Gloria, Magnificat, and Requiem. In June 2024, he recorded Benjamin Britten’s A Ceremony of Carols with the Choristers of Wells Cathedral and Olivia Jageurs (harp); this new recording will be released in December 2024. Between 2020-2024, Alexander was Organ Teacher at Wells Cathedral School, one of the country’s five specialist music schools.

Alexander is passionate about the flourishing of cathedral music around the country, and is closely involved with the work of Cathedral Music Trust. A founder member of their Future Leaders initiative, he is now a member of their Programmes Committee and Grant Assessment Panel. Alexander is also a Patron of Wells Cathedral Chorister Trust. Alexander is delighted to be returning to teach for Creative Oundle for Organists in 2025.
